Newspapers

As I have previously mentioned, reading is one of my hobbies. When I'm abroad, I enjoy reading newspapers on public transport. Since places are far away, not like Malta, one spends considerable time travelling and it's the ideal time to catch up with news. When my bf goes to the UK, he always brings me back with him the newspapers he collects during his stay:) However, it's a good thing that some of these newspapers are available to read on the internet. In fact, I always check the Metro website. It's amazing how many things you learn by reading newspapers!

Books: Going Solo - Roald Dahl

The last book I've read a couple of weeks ago is Going Solo, written by Roald Dahl.

It is an autobiography about his life when he was serving as a pilot during the war. It is a continuation of another autobiography, Boy: Tales of Childhood, which I haven't read yet.

Young Roald Dahl leaves England in 1938 for a job with Shell Oil in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, and travelling around East Africa, he comes to love the beautiful and perilous country. Then, with the outbreak of World War II, he decides to sign up with the Royal Air Force and learn to fly. After six months of training, Dahl is ready to join 80 Squadron but is given the wrong directions and crash-lands in the western desert of Libya. He recuperates for half a year in Egypt and takes to the air again, meeting up at last with his squadron in Greece. Though he has no combat training, and minimal flight experience, he and 14 other pilots make up the entire RAF in that theatre of war. On April 20, 1941, this band must take on the German Luftwaffe in the battle of Athens. Dahl recounts the exhilaration of flying, the camaraderie of his fellow pilots and the exotic beauty of his African experience.

Reading

Reading is definitely one of my hobbies and it has been my hobby since I can remember. I enjoy reading anything, but mostly biographies, novels, and newspapers.

Since I was a kid, I remember always carrying a book with me, nearly everywhere I went! I remember on Sundays, when we used to go out in the afternoon, I was always trying to read books at the back of the car, whilst my dad is driving or on buses (not very good for my eyesight!!). I also remember spending nights reading books to finish a story, instead of sleeping. Nowadays it's been a long time since I last stayed up to finish a book.

When I go to the library, I always end up coming back home with 4 or 5 books. Even at times when I went with the aim just to deposit the books I had on loan without taking any more books, I ended up going against my plans and coming out with a bagful of books!

Since my final exams are around the corner, I decided to take back all the books I had on loan last week, so as to avoid any temptation to start reading one of the books I got which I had not started reading yet!

Gadgets - Shockolate

From crazyaboutgadgets.com:

How many of you are shocked that you have already broken that all important new years resolution? Sweets, junk food ban, use of your credit cards, CHOCOLATE. Whatever your vice just remember that desperate times call for desperate measures.

The Shockolate Vault is the remedy to all your will power problems. The plastic jar has a screw down lid with a timer that can be set by using the + and – buttons. All you need to do is put whatever you’re not supposed to be using / eating inside the jar, lock away your temptation, then sit back with sweaty palms and watch the timer go down. Failure to show strength of character will have shocking results, literally. When you try to open the lid before the timer has run out you’ll get an electric shock that would have Hulk Hogan on his knees in pain. Try as you might, there’s no way to brake into the flexible plastic jar and turn it off (the power button is on the inside…….. Ha Ha).

Gadgets

Everywhere I look, I am always finding gadgets which I never thought existed! Some people may think that they are a waste of money, whilst others think that they may make life easier or are a source of fun/entertainment/hobbies.

When I'm in the UK on holiday, I always visit The Gadget Shop at Covent Garden, sometimes to have a look, and at times I end up buying something, usually for my brothers.

On the internet, one finds countless websites selling gadgets. Examples include crazyaboutgadgets, gadgets and i wantoneofthose. Pity not all of them ship to Malta or shipping costs are too expensive!
